Only two people know the exact recipe for Becherovka with its bitter-sweet accents of cinnamon, clove and ginger. This speciality liqueur has been made in Karlovy Vary (also known as Carlsbad) for over 200 years and is now exported to more than 35 countries. Over time, it has become known and loved in locations across the world, and with the rise of new cocktails and herbal liqueurs, its popularity is only continuing to grow.
The recipe has been unchanged since 1807 and same bottle design has been used since 1838. Becherovka first won the Medaille d’Or and the Grand Prix at the World Fair in Paris in 1871, while Ferdinand Karl, Archduke of Austria used to order 100 bottles per month.
Today, Becherovka is manufactured using the latest techniques and production facilities. Every batch is laboratory tested to ensure it meets the same high standards of taste, smell and appearance of the original recipe. It’s commonly drunk before or after meals as an aid to digestion however it makes a lovely addition to a wide range of drinks including cocktails.
What makes this traditional drink so special is that it’s a 100% natural product, with no preservatives, artificial colours or emulsifiers - something not many other liquor brands can claim! The secret recipe is thought to contain around 20 exotic herbs and spices added to pure alcohol, natural sugar solution and local water. These are then matured in oak barrels to achieve the quality aroma and unique taste loved by many across the world. The simplicity of the ingredients is what makes Becherovka so delicious and gives it the delicate and slightly floral taste that is loved by many.
Although it's traditionally been drunk as a digestif, Becherovka is a versatile drink that is today enjoyed in many ways. Spicy and aromatic, Becherovka makes the ideal ingredient for a range of cocktails, adding bitterness and spice to traditional and modern cocktails. If it’s your first time trying Becherovka and you’re unsure how to serve the liquor, here’s a couple of cocktails we would recommend trying:
Be-ton is a traditional aperitif devised in 1967 for the Montreal World Expo. (Beton means concrete in Czech.) To make this delicious drink, mix 5cl of Becherovka with 10cl of tonic water and serve over ice with a squeeze of lemon juice.
To make this simple yet refreshing cocktail, muddle mint in a mixing tin. Add all but soda, and shake over ice. Pour into a highball glass and top with soda. Stir and top with two dashes Angostura bitters and finally, garnish with a mint sprig. And enjoy!
Jan Becher - Karlovarská Becherovka is a company with a tradition dating back two centuries and few liquor brands have an origin as long-lasting as Becherovka. Little has changed about the business since it’s origins in 1807 when it was founded in 1807 by the Bechers as a family enterprise. Its core business is the production and sale of alcoholic and alcohol-free beverages. It has had the status of a public limited company since 1994, and in 1997 it was privatised and became the property of the world’s No. 2 producer of spirits and wines, the Pernod Ricard group.
